Blissful cricket fans poured onto the roads across Pakistan in Sunday to hail their team’s defeat of India at the T20 World Cup in Dubai.
Pakistan frolicked to a 10-wicket win, its very first at the World Cup level over their South Asian neighbors.
Fireworks, blasting vehicle horns and explosions of gunfire rang out across Pakistani urban communities.
Fans moved and sang, yelling “Pakistan zindabad” (long live Pakistan). Celebratory gunfire emitted from the housetops of houses in the capital, Islamabad, Peshawar and Karachi.
“Congrats to the Pakistan Team and esp to Babar Azam who drove from the front, just as to the splendid exhibitions of Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi,” Prime Minister Imran Khan, who drove Pakistan to triumph in the 1992 World Cup cricket, tweeted.
imran Khan watched the game in Saudi Arabia where he is on an authority visit.
Previous Test cricketer and quick bowler Shoaib Akhtar said in a video message on Twitter: “Our team has broken the legend of the Indian cricket team. We are an enlightened country and we won’t utter a word terrible. Very much done India.. you have done magnificently well however insufficient to beat the mightiest Babar and Rizwan.”
Pursuing 152 for triumph, captain Babar Azam (68) and Mohammad Rizwan (79) controlled their team home with 13 balls to save before 20,000 fans in Dubai and a worldwide TV crowd of many millions.
